Man sentenced to life in prison after killing ex-girlfriend

A Hillsboro man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his girlfriend last year after she tried to leave him.

Before confessing, Delfino Hurtado-Navarette told police his girlfriend – Juanita Rosales-Garcia -- had gone missing and also asked the media for help.

In a Washington County Courthouse today, Hurtado-Navarette listened through a translator as his sentence was read after a jury found him guilty of murdering Rosales-Garcia last March. The body of Rosales-Garcia was eventually found north of Hillsboro.

During his court appearance, Hurtado-Navarette told the court he was remorseful, but justified because Rosales-Garcia had told him she wanted to leave him because she was seeing another man. Hurtado-Navarette then beat Rosales-Garcia unconscious. When she revived, the two began arguing before he grabbed a utility knife and slashed her throat.

"The defendant was claiming that because of things said by the victim, it caused him extreme emotional distress, and therefore it mitigated what he did," said Bik-Na Han, deputy district attorney.

But a jury didn't buy Hurtado-Navarette’s reasoning.
