Police say mom, sons misused med. marijuana status

From left to right: Tina Kohler, Timothy Kohler, and Corey Kohler

A mother, her two sons, and one other person were arrested Thursday over allegations of using their medical marijuana status to sell pot in Washington County.

Detectives searched two homes in Aloha and Hillsboro and said they seized almost four pounds of marijuana as well as other drugs and guns.

Police arrested 40-year-old Tina Kohler and her 22-year-old son, Timothy, at their home on Bingo Lane in Aloha. Kohler’s other son, 21-year-old Corey, and 29-year-old Joshua Dacus were arrested at a home on 73rd Avenue in Hillsboro.

“We are continuously running into medical marijuana cardholders who are growing more than they are supposed to. In some cases they’re selling it; in some cases they’re giving it away,” said Sgt. David Thompson, spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. “The rules are fairly strict and they’re very generous.”

All four are charged with distribution, manufacturing and possession of a controlled substance.

Hillsboro Firefighters Union donates to Brain Tumor Society

When Frank Reimers decided to retire, he wanted his departure from 30 years in the fire service in Hillsboro, to have some meaning.

So Reimers asked his union brothers and sisters to consider a significant donation to brain tumor research, since his niece was undergoing treatment for a cancer known as Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (PNET).

The niece of Reimers, Nicole Callahan, 19, was first diagnosed at age 12 with the relatively rare disorder when she began suffering seizures. Her first round of treatments involved the surgical removal of the mass in her brain followed by six weeks radiation and nearly a year of chemotherapy. Her life returned to near normal for four years until she was about to graduate from high school in 2008. The day after graduation, she knew something was wrong again and the doctors confirmed the tumor had returned and spread to additional areas of her brain. More chemotherapy was attempted, but she could not complete it because it caused too much damage.

In July 2009, the tumor had spread to the opposite side of the brain, so a new treatment had to be found.
