This is not the list you want to make

Washington County has the worst record in the state for protecting children in state foster care.

Last month, state caseworkers failed to see more than 400 Washington County youngsters living in foster homes. And nearly 70 reports of suspected abuse or neglect were not investigated in the 24 hours or five days recommended, depending upon the urgency of the call.

In the past 19 of 23 months, performance data from the Oregon Department of Human Services ranked its Washington County child welfare offices dead last. And during the four months when Washington County didn't finish last, it ranked near the bottom on key measurements for keeping children safe.

State supervisors say they're aware of the problems in Oregon's second-most populated county.

Heartburn or heart attack? What to know this Thanksgiving

For many people, the Thanksgiving dinner and heartburn go hand-in-hand. But how do you know that your chest pain is heartburn and not a heart attack?

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue responds to hundreds of heart-related calls each year. Many of these incidents involve patients who believed they were simply suffering severe heartburn.

Being uncertain if you or a loved one is experiencing a heart attack is normal, but a delay can be deadly or result in permanent heart damage. Unlike a cardiac arrest — which strikes suddenly and includes a loss of consciousness — a heart attack can develop so slowly that you are unaware of what's happening. Symptoms typically include:

  • Chest discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or goes away and returns. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.

Fugitive caught after all-day search

The hunt for a wanted fugitive came to an end Monday night in rural Yamhill County with the arrest of a suspect who eluded police all day, police said.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Josh Nicholas, 36, was located at a residence in an unincorporated area of Yamhill County around 7:45 p.m. with the help of a Washington County K-9 unit and investigators from the U.S. Marshals Oregon Fugitive Task Force.

Police said Nicholas was wanted on two outstanding parole violation warrants for more than a year and is currently being held at the Washington County Jail.

Police declined to give specifics late Monday on how they were able to locate Nicholas.

Earlier in the day, deputies attempted to stop a stolen SUV they said Nicholas was driving but the driver sped away and ditched the vehicle in a field near Northwest Zion Church and NW Susbauer Road -- south of Hwy. 26.
