Want barnyard animals in the city? Hillsboro wants to talk about it

The City of Hillsboro has scheduled three community meetings to have a discussion about the keeping of livestock, chickens and livestock miniatures such as pygmy goats and miniature horses in the city.

Based upon feedback from these meetings, staff will develop policy options for the City Council's consideration this summer. In addition to what types of animals should be allowed within the city limits, the policy options will also address livability issues like noise, odor, containment and health concerns.

The meetings will be held:

  • Feb. 8 from 7-9 p.m. at Century High School
  • Feb. 11 from 7-9 p.m. at Civic Center
  • Feb. 25 from 7-9 p.m. at Quatama Elementary

Staff from the planning and police departments will be at the meetings to share information and answer questions.

Within the last year, the city has fielded 24 inquires and 38 complaints about various animals within the city limits including chickens, goats, horses and peacocks.

From left to right: Tina Kohler, Timothy Kohler, and Corey Kohler

A mother, her two sons, and one other person were arrested Thursday over allegations of using their medical marijuana status to sell pot in Washington County.

Detectives searched two homes in Aloha and Hillsboro and said they seized almost four pounds of marijuana as well as other drugs and guns.

Police arrested 40-year-old Tina Kohler and her 22-year-old son, Timothy, at their home on Bingo Lane in Aloha. Kohler’s other son, 21-year-old Corey, and 29-year-old Joshua Dacus were arrested at a home on 73rd Avenue in Hillsboro.

“We are continuously running into medical marijuana cardholders who are growing more than they are supposed to. In some cases they’re selling it; in some cases they’re giving it away,” said Sgt. David Thompson, spokesman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. “The rules are fairly strict and they’re very generous.”

All four are charged with distribution, manufacturing and possession of a controlled substance.
